So what is APTATS about?

APTATS stands for Advanced Photoshop Techniques And Tips Simplified. An example of a basic APTATS technique can be seen in the before and after image samples above. These advanced techniques techniques are powerful new methods of repairing and optimizing your digital images using simple Photoshop tools and commands. APTATS was created and developed by a professional nature photographer for photographers who know basic Photoshop techniques and would like to learn some new advanced techniques. The techniques are covered in-depth and step-by-step in the APTATS workshops and the APTATS 1 CD. By following along in an APTATS workshop or CD tutorials you will quickly gain experience using masks, layers, and transform commands to repair and optimize digital images quickly and without leaving any traces.

The benefits of using APTATS

APTATS offers unrivaled editing power by eliminating the need and use of traditional repair tools such as Clone Stamp, the Healing brush, and the Patch tool. These tools can be useful but with often leave ugly distortion, smudging and repeating patterns that are easily recognizable by the viewer. Also in the optimization process you will need to select areas for repair. When using Photoshop traditional methods for selection it is customary to use the Magic Wand, one of the Marquee tools, or one of the Lasso tools. By design, these selection tools create a sharply defined edge. To avoid obvious sharp edges, people are typically taught to use feathering or even blurring techniques to create smoother edge transitions in an attempt to hide these obvious edges. The techniques you be utilizing in APTATS leaves no hard edges; there is never a need to try to make a perfect selection. You simply 'paint' with the brush tool to make a selection. Once you have the technique down, and it is fairly simple, there is usually no way to tell where the repaired area begins and where it ends. The super-smooth blending is due to the self-feathering effect of a soft brush. With APTATS there is finally a superior alternative to the Clone Stamp, Patch tool, and Healing brush for repairs.

APTATS FAQ

How do the APTATS techniques differ from the methods I can learn in any Photoshop book or any standard Photoshop workshop?
APTATS techniques are all new and are created by a nature photographer for other photographers. Most Photoshop books and instruction on the market just repeat information seen elsewhere and cover general techniques for graphic artists and photographers but the APTATS techniques are created specifically for the nature photographer.

Is there going to be an APTATS II by any chance?
Yes absolutely, in fact APTATS 2 is already in the development stage.

Who did you get the APTATS techniques from? Did you develop them of did or did you just copy them?

Robert OToole developed APTATS by applying his background in commercial (advertising) post production work. This development process is continuing today to develop future APTATS techniques, products and workshops.

How does Robert OToole know so much about Photoshop, do he work for Adobe?

No, Robert is a full time nature photographer. Almost all of his Photoshop experience has been on the job working as a nature photographer and in commercial photography previously in Los Angeles.

Can I use the APTATS tutorials with my Photoshop Elements.

No you cannot use the APTATS tutorials with PS Elements. It does not offer Layer masks, Quick Mask, or channels. I normally recommend upgrading to PS CS2/3 for these additional features. I consider them indispensable for any serious photographer.

Your new newsletter images do not display in my email application. Are you aware of any particular setting I could change to see the images?

Certain email applications will not display images unless specifically allowed to do so. Usually there will be a check box or prompt to allow the images to be displayed. As an alternative you can follow the link at the top of the page to open in the newsletter in your browser application.

Can I use the APTATS tutorials with Photoshop CS 8.0?

Yes, you can use APTATS techniques with Photoshop CS, CS2, and CS3.

APTATS testimonials

The APTATS workshop was great! In the past I had been removing unwanted objects with cloning and healing brush techniques, they took forever and never worked as well as I had hoped. Rebuilding a wing was beyond my pain tolerance. Now, with APTATS quick mask techniques it is much faster and looks much, much better. The quick mask method is so simple that I use your techniques all the time. It takes only 5 minutes to clean up an image without leaving a trace.
From Jack Panzeca, CEO of Universal Cinema Services

Dear Mr. O'Toole, I just received your APTATS CD and completed the quick mask object removal tutorial. I want to tell you that this technique is amazing! I tried something similar many times in the past with limited to horrible success. After a few trials I was able to get an image that I love. Thank you so very much. I also want to thank you for putting the hard work, effort, and time into your free Newsletter. Your efforts have made mine so much more enjoyable.
Sincerely, Jim (Howell)
